Generation-X babies have all grown up and have families all their own. While their parents were marrying and divorcing in the age when the concept of "fairness" for a no-fault was in its initial stages, the children were in the middle of it all. In a story written by a Wall Street journalist, the Generation-X author and child of divorce said that her generation "survived the wreckage of split families."
Uncontested divorce and divorce mediation have become widely accepted in the current generation of moms and dads. We are "determined never to inflict such wounds on our children," she said of the violent battles that caused confusion and stress for a child at a very susceptible age.
Generation-X parents are raising children in an era where every penny counts. The economic recession has forced parents to borrow more against the house, figure out ways to make ends meet after a parent loses their job and watches as the their incomes go down but the cost of raising a child goes up. The precarious situation often causes stress in a relationship but leaves little money for an adversarial divorce.
Parents of this generation understand through experience that fighting in front of and over the children is not healthy whether during a marriage or a divorce. These spouses have chosen to obtain "friendly divorces." The middle age parents are utilizing divorce mediation to come to peaceful agreement on what can sometimes be contentious issues like child custody or property division.
The uncontested divorce that results saves them money and stress, affording them the opportunity to keep a working, healthy parental relationship that benefits their children in so many ways.
